A Paleo Diet Plan For Athletes: Wholesome Choice Or As Well Radical A Change In Nutrition?

December 28, 2022 , Uncategorized

Strength and power athletes get a different answer than endurance athletes on the paleo question, and most paleo articles don’t make that distinction. A marathon runner burning through glycogen for two hours needs a steady carbohydrate supply that grains and pasta make easy to hit. A lifter or a sprinter training in short, intense bursts has a lower total carbohydrate need and a higher protein need — which happens to be exactly what a paleo-style diet is built around.

That’s the case for trying it: more meat, fish and eggs for protein, more vegetables for micronutrients, less reliance on bread and processed snacks between meals. For someone training for strength rather than endurance, cutting the volume of refined carbs rarely costs anything in performance and often improves how full and steady you feel between meals.

Where it gets harder is around training sessions themselves. Paleo eating leans on protein and fat, both of which digest slowly — not ideal in the 30-60 minutes before a session when you want something that sits light but still delivers usable energy. This is the gap most paleo-for-athletes plans skip over.

Dried fruit fills that gap without breaking the diet’s rules. Dates in particular carry a dense, fast-digesting sugar load in a small volume of food, plus potassium and a small amount of fibre — useful before a session when you don’t want a heavy meal sitting in your stomach, and paleo-compliant because there’s nothing added to them. A couple of dates 20-30 minutes before training, or a handful straight after, cover the fast-carb need paleo otherwise makes harder to plan around.

The honest limitation is variety and cost over time — an all-paleo diet run for months needs more meal planning than most people sustain, and buying enough protein and fresh produce to replace grains as a calorie base is not always cheaper. For a strength-focused training block, though, the trade-off tends to favour paleo more than it does for someone training for distance.
